U.S. Expat Tax Services
U.S. Expat Tax Services for Americans Living in Belize
U.S. tax preparation, foreign income reporting and IRS compliance support for Americans in Belize — delivered remotely nationwide, internationally by virtual consultation, and in person in San Ignacio, Cayo District.
Most Americans who settle in Belize do not intend to fall out of step with the IRS. They simply discover, sometimes years later, that the United States is unusual: it taxes its citizens on worldwide income no matter where they live. The obligation travelled with them, quietly, and nobody mentioned it at the border.
Accounting & Tax Associates provides U.S. expat tax services to Americans living in Belize — annual return preparation, foreign income reporting, FBAR and FATCA review, support with the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, and planning for the years ahead. We also prepare Belize filings, which means both sides of your position are built from one set of records instead of two.
The information on this page is educational. Every expat situation turns on details — where you were physically present, how income arose, what accounts exist, what has already been filed. Those details are what a consultation is for.
Who must file U.S. taxes while living in Belize
Filing is driven by status and income, not by location. If you are a U.S. citizen, a dual citizen or a lawful permanent resident, the same federal rules that applied in Miami or Houston continue to apply in Cayo or on Ambergris Caye.
The table below sets out the situations we are asked about most. It is a general guide to who typically has something to file — thresholds change, and your own position should be confirmed before you act on it.
| Your situation | Typically arises | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. citizen employed in Belize | Annually | Worldwide income reported on a federal return, with relief considered for tax paid locally. |
| Retiree drawing U.S. pension or Social Security | Annually | Retirement income remains U.S.-reportable even when it is received and spent in Belize. |
| Self-employed consultant or digital nomad | Annually, from a low threshold | Self-employment reporting generally begins at a much lower income level than salaried filing. |
| Owner of a Belize business or U.S. LLC | Annually, plus entity reporting | Additional information reporting can apply depending on how the entity is structured. |
| Holder of Belize bank or financial accounts | When balances exceed thresholds | FBAR and possibly FATCA reporting, separate from the income tax return itself. |
| Owner of Belize rental or vacation property | Annually where income arises | Rental income and related expenses reported in U.S. dollars on a consistent basis. |
| American behind on several years | As soon as it is identified | Position quantified first, then a catch-up route considered, including streamlined procedures. |
Why U.S. citizens must continue filing from abroad
Almost every other country taxes on residence. The United States taxes on citizenship. That single difference is the reason an American in Belmopan has an annual federal obligation while a Canadian neighbour, in identical circumstances, does not.
Filing is not the same as paying. A large number of the expat returns we prepare result in no U.S. tax owed, because the available relief mechanisms absorb the liability. The return still has to exist — relief is generally claimed on a filed return, and an unfiled year claims nothing.
There is also a practical reason to stay current. A filed history is what banks, lenders, immigration processes and future account openings tend to ask for. Gaps become expensive at exactly the moment you need the paperwork.
Points Americans abroad often miss
- Citizenship-based taxation continues indefinitely while status is held.
- Green card holders are generally treated the same as citizens for filing.
- Foreign account reporting is separate from the income tax return.
- An automatic extension is commonly available to taxpayers living abroad.
- Relief from double taxation must generally be claimed, not assumed.
- Belize filings and U.S. filings should agree with each other.
Our U.S. expat tax services
Engagements range from a single annual return to a multi-year catch-up with ongoing support afterwards. Each service below can be taken on its own or combined.
Annual U.S. tax return preparation
Your federal return prepared from complete income records, with foreign income converted, reported and reconciled to what you actually received.
Foreign earned income exclusion
A general review of whether the exclusion is available to you, how the qualifying tests work, and what it does and does not cover.
Foreign tax credit
An explanation of how credit for tax paid in Belize interacts with your U.S. position, and which relief route suits your circumstances.
FBAR reporting
Foreign financial account reports prepared from highest-balance figures, including joint accounts and accounts you hold signature authority over.
FATCA reporting
A general review of whether your specified foreign financial assets reach the reporting thresholds attached to the return itself.
Streamlined filing procedures
Overview and preparation support for Americans who fell behind without intending to, where the streamlined route may be available.
Late and back filing assistance
Outstanding years identified, quantified and prepared in a defined order so the backlog stops growing while you decide what to do.
Expat tax planning
Forward-looking discussion of residency timing, business structure and account arrangements, held while the decisions are still open.
Annual U.S. tax return preparation
Preparation starts with income, in full, from every source and every country. For a client in Belize that commonly means a mixture: a local salary or consulting income, a U.S. pension or Social Security payment, rental income from a property here or at home, interest on accounts in two banking systems, and occasionally a distribution from a business.
Each figure is converted to U.S. dollars on a documented basis, classified correctly, and traced back to a record we can produce later. Only then do we consider which relief route applies. Choosing the mechanism before knowing the numbers is how people end up filing twice.
Where a Belize business or Belize-source income is involved, the U.S. work draws on the same reconciled records used for our Belize tax preparation engagements, supported where needed by our bookkeeping services.
Foreign earned income exclusion — general explanation
The foreign earned income exclusion allows qualifying taxpayers to exclude a limited amount of earned income from U.S. taxation when they meet one of the residence or physical presence tests. It applies to income earned from work — wages, salary, self-employment — and not to pensions, investment income or rental income. Qualifying depends on your pattern of presence during the year, which is why travel records matter more than most people expect. The exclusion is elected on a filed return and, once elected, carries rules about revoking it in later years. We explain the general framework and review whether it is likely to apply to you; we do not treat it as a default answer.
Foreign tax credit — general explanation
The foreign tax credit is the other principal route to avoiding double taxation. In broad terms it allows income tax paid to another country to offset U.S. tax on the same income, subject to limitations and to categories of income being kept separate. For Americans paying tax in Belize, the credit is often the more useful mechanism where income falls outside what the exclusion covers, or where the exclusion is unavailable. The two interact, and using one can affect the other. The right combination is a calculation, not a preference, and it is worth revisiting when your income mix changes.
FBAR and FATCA reporting
Foreign account reporting catches more Americans in Belize than income tax does. It is separate from the return, it is driven by account balances rather than income, and it does not care whether the money is yours in any everyday sense.
FBAR is filed with FinCEN and reports non-U.S. financial accounts once the combined highest balances during the year exceed the reporting threshold. Chequing accounts, savings, certain business accounts and accounts you merely have signature authority over can all be in scope.
FATCA reporting attaches to the tax return and covers a broader set of specified foreign financial assets at higher thresholds that vary with filing status and residence. The same account may need to appear in both places, which is not duplication — the two regimes serve different purposes.
We are preparing a dedicated FBAR filing page. Until it is published, email us about FBAR filing and we will walk through your accounts with you.
Accounts clients forget to mention
- A joint account held with a Belizean spouse or partner.
- A company account you sign on but do not personally own.
- A dormant account left open with a small balance.
- Fixed deposits and credit union accounts.
- Accounts in a third country from an earlier posting.
- Balances that peaked briefly during a property purchase.
Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures
The IRS operates procedures for taxpayers whose failure to file was not wilful — people who genuinely did not know the obligation continued after they moved. In general terms, the streamlined route involves filing a defined number of prior year returns and foreign account reports, together with a certification describing why the filings were missed.
Eligibility is specific and the certification is a serious document. It should be prepared carefully, from facts, and never rushed. What we can tell you plainly is this: the position is almost always better when a taxpayer comes forward before being contacted.
A dedicated Streamlined Filing Compliance page is in preparation. In the meantime, you can check whether the route may fit your circumstances, or email us about streamlined filing.
IRS compliance and late filing assistance
Compliance work begins with an honest inventory: which years are unfiled, which were filed but incomplete, what income arose in each, and which accounts existed. Until that is written down, everything else is speculation.
From there the years are prepared in order, so each one opens from figures already reported. Where notices have been received, we help you read what they actually say — many are automated, many are answerable with documents, and very few require the reaction they provoke.
Accounting & Tax Associates provides tax preparation and compliance support. We do not provide audit, attestation or assurance services, do not act as legal counsel or licensed financial advisers, and do not represent clients as IRS Enrolled Agents. Information on this page is educational and not individualized tax advice.
How a catch-up engagement runs
- Inventory of unfiled years, accounts and prior correspondence.
- Reconstruction of income and balances from available records.
- Review of which catch-up route realistically applies.
- Returns and account reports prepared year by year, in order.
- Draft figures reviewed with you before anything is submitted.
- A maintenance plan so the same gap does not reopen.
Tax planning for U.S. expats
A return records decisions already taken. Planning is the conversation held while those decisions are still open — the year you arrive, the year you buy property, the year the side consultancy becomes a business.
These discussions are practical rather than theoretical. We work from your figures, explain the reporting consequence of each option in plain language, and leave the decision with you. Nothing here is investment advice, and we do not sell financial products.
- Timing of arrival and departure within a tax year.
- Travel records that support presence-based tests.
- How a Belize business or U.S. LLC is structured and reported.
- How and when owners draw funds from a business.
- Account arrangements and the reporting they create.
- Property purchases, rental use and record keeping from day one.
- Coordinating Belize and U.S. deadlines in one calendar.
- Keeping documentation in a form that survives a later question.
Owners weighing structure and growth questions can also email us about business consulting, a dedicated page for which is in preparation.
Common mistakes made by U.S. expats
None of these are unusual, and none of them are unrecoverable. Recognising one early is generally the difference between a correction and a multi-year exercise.
Assuming the move ended the obligation
Leaving the United States changes your address, not your citizenship. The filing requirement follows the passport, and the years continue to accumulate quietly in the background.
Believing low income means no filing
Thresholds are lower than most people expect, particularly for self-employed individuals. A modest consulting income earned in Belize can create a filing requirement on its own.
Overlooking accounts held jointly or for a business
An account in a spouse's name that you can sign on, or a company account you control, frequently belongs in foreign account reporting even though you do not think of the money as yours.
Treating the exclusion as automatic
Relief from double taxation is claimed, not granted by default. It generally has to be elected on a filed return, and a return that was never filed cannot claim it.
Reporting only what reached a U.S. bank
Income is reported when earned, not when transferred. Money that stayed in a Belize account, or never left a payment platform, is still reportable.
Ignoring currency and record keeping
Amounts must be reported in U.S. dollars using a defensible conversion basis, supported by records. Reconstructing that three years later is far harder than capturing it as you go.
Who we serve
An expat return looks very different for a retiree in Corozal than for a consultant invoicing U.S. clients from San Pedro. These are the Americans we work with most often.
Remote service throughout Belize and internationally
Nothing about a U.S. expat return requires you to be in the room. Documents are shared electronically, questions are handled by email or WhatsApp, and figures come back for your review before anything is filed.
We serve Americans in San Ignacio and across the Cayo District, in Belmopan, Placencia, San Pedro, Orange Walk, Corozal, Dangriga and Punta Gorda, and hold international virtual consultations for clients still preparing to relocate or living elsewhere in the region. Office hours and directions are on our contact page.
How remote engagements work
- A document checklist matched to your situation up front.
- Secure electronic delivery, or drop-off at the San Ignacio office.
- Scheduled video or phone consultations across time zones.
- Questions raised as they arise, not stored up for the deadline.
- Draft figures and reports sent for your review before filing.
- Completed filings and working papers retained on file.
Why choose Accounting & Tax Associates
Choosing someone to handle U.S. filings from Belize comes down to two things: whether they understand both systems, and whether the figures filed on your behalf can still be explained years later. These are the qualifications and working practices behind our work.

U.S. expat tax questions we are asked most in Belize
Do Americans living in Belize still have to file a U.S. tax return?
In most cases, yes. U.S. citizens and green card holders are taxed on worldwide income regardless of where they live, so a return is generally required once income passes the filing threshold for your status. Moving to Belize changes where you live, not who the filing rules apply to.
I pay tax in Belize already. Am I being taxed twice?
Not usually. U.S. law contains relief mechanisms — most commonly the foreign earned income exclusion and the foreign tax credit — that are designed to prevent the same income being taxed twice. Which one produces the better outcome depends on your income type and your Belize position, and it is worth reviewing rather than assuming.
What is an FBAR and would I need one?
An FBAR is a report of foreign financial accounts filed with FinCEN, separate from your tax return. It is generally triggered when the combined highest balances of your non-U.S. accounts exceed the reporting threshold at any point during the year. Many Americans in Belize are surprised to learn that joint accounts and signature authority over a business account can count.
How is FATCA different from FBAR?
FBAR reports accounts to FinCEN. FATCA reporting is attached to the tax return itself and covers a broader definition of specified foreign financial assets at higher thresholds. The two overlap, so the same account can appear in both. We review which applies to your circumstances rather than filing one and hoping it covers the other.
I have not filed U.S. taxes in several years. What happens now?
You establish the facts before anything else: which years are open, what income arose, and what accounts existed. The IRS offers procedures for taxpayers whose failure to file was not wilful, including the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures. Coming forward on your own terms is a materially different position from being contacted first.
Do you handle both my U.S. and my Belize filings?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons Americans here work with us. Both sides are prepared from the same underlying records, so a figure reported to the Belize Tax Service and the equivalent figure on your U.S. return do not contradict each other.
I run a business in Belize. Does that complicate my U.S. return?
It adds reporting, and the treatment depends heavily on how the entity is structured and how you take money out of it. This is one area where a consultation before year end is far more useful than a conversation after it.
Can everything be handled remotely from Placencia, San Pedro or anywhere else?
Yes. Documents are shared electronically, questions are handled by email, WhatsApp or scheduled video calls, and draft figures come back for your review before anything is filed. Clients in Placencia, San Pedro, Belmopan, Corozal, Orange Walk, Dangriga and Punta Gorda are served on the same schedule as clients who visit the San Ignacio office.
What documents should I gather before our first conversation?
Your last filed U.S. return, income records for the year including any Belize-source income, statements for all non-U.S. financial accounts showing the highest balance, any Belize tax filings, and details of property or business interests. If something is missing, say so — reconstruction is normal work, not a problem.
Are you a CPA, attorney or IRS Enrolled Agent?

We hold a Master's Degree in Taxation and a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting with more than 20 years of accounting and financial management experience.
